Sri Lanka’s Parliament was dissolved on March 2nd setting elections for April 25th but due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, the elections office postponed the election for June 20th.
This date too became unrealistic and a new date is set to be announced soon.
"A country which does not have a Parliament consisting of elected representatives of the people is not democratic", added Mahinda Deshapriya, Chairman of National Election Commission while speaking to reporters.
Deshapriya said that Coronavirus is not something that can be controlled completely, and the country will have to “live with it” until the world finds a cure or a vaccine.
The National Election Commission conducted a ‘test-run election’ on Sunday (7th June) to see the possibility of conducting the elections under the new normal with the Pandemic restricting the normal activities in the country.
"Based on the situation that we witnessed today there are no major problems. But this cannot be generalized. That is because we have to be mindful of the cost. This is the people's money. But democracy is not cheap…" concluded Deshapriya.
