COLOMBO (News1st): A Sri Lankan professor has opined that the general elections can be held based on the recommendations of the health sector, amidst the coronavirus pandemic. "...if responsible authorities feel that this could be contained, there is no need to consult the politicians, I think we should hold the elections," Professor Channa Jayasumana who heads the pharmacology department at the Rajarata University told reporters on Tuesday. The government has called on the national election commission to conduct the general election with critics questioning the move owing to the current situation surrounding the coronavirus. "Enfranchisement is the democratic right of the people. We have been able to successfully contain COVID - 19 thus far," Professor Jayasumana, an active member of the Viyathmaga Movement which has links to the ruling party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna observed.
