Illegal election propaganda on the rise - CMEV

COLOMBO (News 1st):- Election monitors state that illegal election propaganda and hate speech spread through social media platforms are on the rise with over 100 complaints being lodged so far. National Convenor of the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV), Manjula Gajanayake states that a separate unit has been established in order to monitor these operations. The NEC notes that 40 complaints have been lodged with regards to illegal election propaganda carried out through many social media platforms which mainly includes Facebook. The NEC added that necessary action has been taken on 25 of these complaints after matters were informed to the relevant social media platforms.
