Colombo (News1st) – There has been a lot of buzz in the political arena regarding the possibility of creating a caretaker Government. There were recent reports of a secretive meeting between former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and the incumbent president, followed by a gathering of joint opposition members at the Mahinda Rajapaksa residence on Tuesday.
However, convening a media briefing today State Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ajith P. Perera host down rumors of a possible caretaker Government being formed. The state Minister noted that there are attempts being made to artificially create political instability within the country.
According to the state minister, the backing of a majority of Parliament is necessary to form a caretaker Government and he believes that the opposition does not have the required numbers. Ajith P. Perera went onto state that even if the joint opposition joined forces with all the members of the SLFP in parliament, they would not have the 113 majorities to form a caretaker government, win a no-confidence motion or defeat the budget.
He also stated that all this is being done in order to create political instability, destroy the economy and influence the judiciary.
