Colombo (News1st) – There is a lot of talk in the joint Opposition camp about toppling the Government. Following a meeting held on Tuesday (Oct 9) both former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Basil Rajapaksa spoke about toppling the Government. Incidentally, former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa also expressed similar views on Tuesday.

The statement made by Gotabaya Rajapaksa was criticized by politicians and political activists today after it was widely reported it the media.

UNP MP Mujibur Rahman stated that this is a serious statement by an individual who held a high rank in the Government and that this should be immediately looking into. The MP noted that it is concerning to see an individual of this nature coming before the media to make such a statement.

Politburo Member of the Frontline Socialist Party, Duminda Nagamuwa echoed the concerns of MP Rahman and stated that when an individual such as Gotabaya Rajapaksa makes such a statement it raises concerns regarding how such a change of power could take place. He noted that Gotabaya’s statements have a certain military shadow behind it. Nagamuwa went onto note that it is Namal Rajapaksa who is most afraid of a Gotabaya Rajapaksa presidential bid because they know about his behavior much better than the public.

JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake speaking to the media stated that Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the type of person who used army personnel to bathe dogs, look after hoses and pin sarees. Rathnayake believes that Gotabaya is confused because he has lost the backing of the tri-forces and the opportunity to become a presidential candidate.
