COLOMBO (News 1st) – An Indian national was arrested recently while he was allegedly at the residence of Namal Kumara of the Anti-Corruption Force, who made revelations regarding an alleged assassination plot.
The Indian national is currently being interrogated by the Criminal Investigations Department under detention orders.
UPFA Parliamentarian, Dinesh Gunawardene stated that the matter of the Indian citizen is of grave concern adding that although a couple of days had passed since the matter was been revealed to the entire country, the proper action is yet to be taken.
Police Media Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara convened a media briefing on Wednesday to explain the progress of the investigation. He revealed that the Indian national had arrived in Sri Lanka on January last year adding that since the CID has no clear idea about how he had received the money, investigations should first be held to dig deep into that matter.
With regard to the telephone conversations, the spokesperson stated that the Indian national had not revealed any information with regard to the matter.
Meanwhile, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka issued a statement to the media clarifying the arrest of the Indian national.
The statement reads that the High Commission has taken the matter seriously adding it has informed Indian authorities to conduct a background check on the Indian national based on the limited information provided by the Sri Lankan authorities. The High Commission says preliminary investigations have revealed that the Indian national in question suffers from a history of mental illness.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka said this information has been provided to the authorities in Sri Lanka adding it has assured their fullest cooperation and support to conduct a complete and professional investigation into the matter.
