Electric Vehicles to Get Green Number Plates: DMT

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Motor Traffic says number plates with a specific design with a Green background will be issued for all electric vehicles.

Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, retired Air Vice Marshal Thushara Indunil Fernando, said the green number plates issued for electric vehicles are legally valid.

He added that white and yellow number plates will continue to be issued for other vehicles.

The Department of Motor Traffic also says new number plates have been prepared for 88,740 registered vehicles.

Commissioner General Thushara Indunil Fernando said this includes 56,233 number plates for vehicles registered during the period June 10, 2026, and August 31, 2026.

He further stated that number plates for 32,507 vehicles registered during 2023 and 2024 have also been prepared.

The Commissioner General has requested the relevant vehicle owners to visit the Department of Motor Traffic office in Narahenpita to collect their vehicle number plates.
