COLOMBO (News 1st): The Supreme Court today (2) concluded hearing the petitions filed challenging the Government's proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill.
The petitions were heard before a five-member Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeysekera, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.
The legal challenge attracted significant public, political and legal attention, with multiple petitioners presenting arguments over two days regarding the constitutional implications of the proposed amendment.
Following the conclusion of submissions by all parties, Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena announced that the Court's determination would be communicated confidentially to the Speaker of Parliament in due course.
