Lawyers' for puclic mandate Condemns Parliamentary Remarks on Judiciary and Criticizes Opposition Silence

President's Counsel Mohan Weerakoon, representing Lawyers for Public Mandate, strongly condemned recent derogatory remarks made in Parliament by a Matale district MP concerning facts published on websites about the Chief Justice.

President's Counsel Mohan Weerakoon highlighted that Parliamentary Standing Order 82 strictly forbids discussing courts or judges. Legal experts warned that turning a blind eye to this violation severely undermines public confidence in both the judiciary and the country's governance structure.

Meanwhile, Gamini Nallaperuma, representing Lawyers for Public Mandate, emphasized that a genuine opposition leader must challenge incorrect claims from party ministers rather than blindly agreeing with them. He expressed disappointment over the current leader’s silence regarding MP Rohini Kavirathne’s offensive remarks, viewing that silence as implicit endorsement.
