COLOMBO(News 1st): The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has launched a borehole drilling project to access groundwater as a precaution against possible water shortages.

Its Chairman Engineer Chandana Bandara said the project was initiated in anticipation of extreme dry weather conditions that could occur due to El Niño, potentially restricting water supplies from rivers and reservoirs.

Speaking to News First, Chandana Bandara stated that the current water capacity of the reservoirs used by the Water Supply and Drainage Board stands at around 55 percent.

He said the project is aimed at ensuring a continuous water supply in the event of reduced water availability from existing sources.
