COLOMBO (News 1st); A new tourism attraction aimed at showcasing Sri Lanka's natural beauty to both local and foreign visitors has been launched in Polonnaruwa, offering a unique kayaking experience along the scenic Elahera Yoda Ela.

Renowned for its picturesque surroundings and tranquil waters, the historic canal is now open to adventure seekers and nature lovers who wish to explore one of the region's most beautiful waterways from a completely new perspective.

The initiative was launched as a pilot project, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy kayak boat rides along the canal while experiencing the rich natural landscapes that surround it.

The programme has been introduced through a joint effort involving the Elahara Divisional Secretariat, the Elahara Pradeshiya Sabha and tourism promotion agencies, with the broader objective of developing the tourism industry in the area.

In addition to attracting tourists, the project is expected to contribute to rural economic development by creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for local communities.

Speaking on the initiative, Elahara Pradeshiya Sabha Vice Chairman M.L.M. Dodangoda said the canal offers an ideal environment to safely operate kayak services up to the water distribution point.

The new tourism venture covers the section of the Elahara Yoda Ela stretching from Bakamuna to Kottapitiya, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a distinctive outdoor experience while taking in the area's breathtaking scenery.
