Perseids Meteor Shower Visible Over Sri Lanka Until August 24

COLOMBO (News1st): Sri Lankan residents will have the opportunity to observe the Perseids meteor shower from today until August 24.

Astronomers say the meteor shower reached its peak in the early hours of today. However, it can also be observed tomorrow morning by looking carefully toward the northeastern sky.

The Perseids are made up of debris from a 26-kilometre-wide comet discovered in 1862, which orbits the Sun once every 133 years.

This year, the peak of the meteor shower coincides with a new moon, creating ideal viewing conditions with darker skies.

Astronomers say that, if skies remain clear, observers could see up to 100 meteors per hour.
