COLOMBO (News 1st); Court has granted detention orders for further questioning of a prison officer attached to the Colombo Magazine Prison, who was arrested on suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking.
The order was issued after the suspect was produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate's Court.
The prison officer was arrested yesterday in the Borella area following an investigation into an alleged narcotics supply operation linked to an inmate at the Colombo Magazine Prison.
Police Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler stated that investigations had revealed the officer was allegedly supplying drugs to a narcotics trafficker currently incarcerated at the prison.
According to police, the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit had earlier arrested an individual suspected of supplying drugs to the prison officer.
During questioning, the suspect had allegedly disclosed that the narcotics were being handed over to the prison officer.
Police investigations subsequently confirmed the information, leading officers to launch a targeted operation.
Authorities said the prison officer was arrested while allegedly arriving to collect the narcotics from the suspect.
