Government Reviews Marine And Coastal Protection Measures

COLOMBO (News 1st): A progress review meeting on the protection of marine and coastal resources was held at the Ministry of Environment.

The meeting was co-chaired by Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Patabendi, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, and Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd). Aruna Jayasekara.

The meeting reviewed ongoing measures to protect coastal resources, prevent environmental pollution, and strengthen security at fishing harbours and islands.

The committee, chaired by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, comprises representatives from the Ministries of Defence, Environment, Fisheries, and Tourism, along with key stakeholders from government and non-governmental institutions.

Discussions also focused on identifying security gaps at fishing harbours and formulating practical recommendations to enhance both security and environmental protection.
