Prison Unrest Not a National Security Threat, Says Minister

COLOMBO (News 1st); Recent disturbances reported across several prisons are not a threat to national security, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala assured, while revealing that authorities suspect the incidents may be linked to a planned act of sabotage.

Wijepala said the pattern of disturbances has raised suspicions that there may be a coordinated and disruptive operation behind the incidents. However, he emphasized that a full investigation is required before any final conclusions can be reached.

The Public Security Minister said the government is treating the situation as a serious matter and is closely monitoring developments.

While rejecting suggestions that the incidents pose a threat to national security, Wijepala reaffirmed that the government remains committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens across the country.

He said authorities are taking steps to guarantee public security while also safeguarding inmates and prison officials working within the correctional system.

According to the Minister, efforts are currently underway to bring the situation under control, while several short-term and long-term measures have already been proposed to address the underlying issues.

Wijepala further disclosed that the Cabinet has appointed a special committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Justice to examine the matter and recommend necessary measures.

He also revealed that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has convened a special discussion involving relevant stakeholders to address the situation.

The Minister said urgent action is being taken to respond to the developments and restore stability, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the prison disturbances.
