COLOMBO (News 1st): The Irrigation Department has warned that a major flood situation could develop in low-lying areas along the Kelani River within the next 24 hours, as heavy rainfall continues to impact several parts of the country.
Residents in the Divisional Secretariat areas of Dehiowita, Ruwanwella and Yatiyantota have been urged to remain vigilant in view of the escalating flood threat.
The Department further stated that minor flooding may occur within the next 24 hours in low-lying areas belonging to the Dompe, Seethawaka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama and Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat divisions along the Kelani River basin.
Authorities warned that water levels in the Kelani River could rise rapidly and advised residents, motorists and those using the river to exercise extreme caution. People travelling through affected areas have also been urged to remain alert and follow instructions issued by emergency response agencies.
