AG Confirms Constitutional Compliance Of Judicial Retirement Age Proposal

COLOMBO (News 1st): Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe says he has issued a certificate confirming that the proposal to extend the retirement age of judges in the judiciary is consistent with the Constitution.

He stated that the certificate has been forwarded to the Legal Draftsman for further action.

The proposal to increase the retirement age of judges across all courts by two years received Cabinet approval on July 27.

Under the proposal, a constitutional amendment bill will be drafted to extend the retirement age of judges of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal by two years.

Cabinet approval has also been granted to amend the Judicature Act to extend the retirement age of judges serving in other courts.
