Uninterrupted Water Supply Guaranteed for Three Months Even Without Rain, Says Housing Minister

COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe states that an uninterrupted water supply can be provided for three consecutive months even if there is no rain.

The Minister made this remark while joining an observation tour of the Labugama Reservoir.

Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Dr. Susil Ranasinghe said measures have been implemented to mitigate the potential impacts of the forecast El Niño condition.

He stated that the main challenge is ensuring an uninterrupted water supply during August and September by effectively managing available water resources.

The Minister said that, according to data analysis and assessments by National Water Supply and Drainage Board experts, the current water levels at the Labugama and 
Kalatu wawa reservoirs are sufficient to maintain an uninterrupted supply for three months, even if rainfall does not occur during that period.

He added that water supply operations in the Western Province rely on three main sources, the Kelani River, the Kalu River, and the Labugama and Kalatu wawa reservoirs and based on current water capacities, the next two months are not expected to pose a risk.
