COLOMBO (News 1st); The Prisons Department has stated that an investigation into the damage caused to prison property during the clash at the Negombo Prison has commenced.
Media spokesperson, A.C. Gajanayake, mentioned that this investigation is being conducted under the leadership of a Senior Superintendent of Prisons.
This committee will look into the causes of the clash as well as the damage caused to prison property.
A.C. Gajanayake said that a large number of prison property was damaged during the clash. He noted that many documents, including prisoner registration records, were destroyed.
Eight prison officers and 21 inmates died in the clash that occurred on the 6th of July.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has also initiated a broad investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the transfer of inmates from the Negombo prison to other prisons continues following the clash.
Of The 2,400 Inmates Previously Held At the Negombo Prison, The Number Of Inmates Currently being held At The Facility is around 600.
