Sri Lanka Declares New Mahamodara Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Government of Sri Lanka has officially established the Mahamodara Prison through an Extraordinary Gazette issued under the provisions of the Prisons Ordinance (Chapter 54).

According to Gazette Extraordinary No. 2496/10 dated July 7, 2026, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara exercised the powers vested in him under Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance to formally designate Mahamodara as a prison for the purposes of the law.

The Gazette states that the newly established prison will fall under the jurisdiction of the entire territory of Sri Lanka, giving it nationwide scope under the provisions outlined in the order.
