National Accident Prevention Week Begins Today (06)

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Health has announced the commencement of the 11th National Accident Prevention Week today. 

The Ministry stated that thousands of people die annually due to accidents, while many others are left injured or disabled.

In view of this situation, the National Accident Prevention Week will be held from today until the 10th of this month to raise public awareness on accident prevention.

The opening ceremony of the programme will be held this morning at the main auditorium of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, under the patronage of Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.

The Ministry noted that a significant proportion of hospital admissions are due to emergency accidents.

Road accidents, workplace incidents, drowning cases, and home-related accidents are identified as the main causes.

The national programme, organized by the Non-Communicable Disease Unit of the Ministry of Health under the guidance of the National Advisory Committee on Accident Prevention, will focus on a different matters each day.

Today's activities will be focused on Road Accident Prevention and tomorrow's programme on Workplace Accident Prevention.

The following day has been designated as Home and Elderly Care Accident Prevention Day.

The Ministry said that throughout the week, awareness programmes, identification of high-risk locations, practical initiatives to build safer environments, and short-, medium-, and long-term measures to reduce accidents will be implemented islandwide.
