COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Energy stressed that it expects to provide an uninterrupted power supply despite the potential impact of the El Niño situation.
Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake said that current estimates indicate that only hydropower generation may be affected to some extent due to El Niño conditions.
According to the Minister, the reduction in hydropower generation is estimated at 127 hours.
However, he noted that the shortfall can be compensated for through alternative energy sources.
He further assured that there are no plans to impose power cuts as an energy-saving measure.
Meanwhile, the Minister said a discussion with the President is scheduled for next week to assess the possible impact of the El Niño situation on the energy sector and to determine the necessary steps to address any challenges.
