COLOMBO (News 1st); Mexico made a powerful statement in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, defeating South Africa 2-0 to kick off the global tournament in front of a roaring home crowd in Mexico City.
The highly anticipated Group A clash, held at the iconic Mexico City Stadium on June 11, marked the official start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing together nations from across the world in what is the largest edition of the tournament to date.
Mexico’s victory ensured a dream start for the co-host nation, with the team securing all three points in their opening fixture and setting the tone for their campaign. The result also ended a long-standing struggle for Mexico in World Cup openers, where wins had previously eluded them.
Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez sealed the 2-0 win, with Mexico showing control and attacking intent throughout the match. Quiñones opened the scoring early, energising the home supporters, while Jiménez added a second goal in the latter stages to confirm the victory and cap a confident performance.
The match was not without drama, as it saw an unusual number of disciplinary incidents, including three red cards, making it one of the most intense World Cup opening matches in recent history.
South Africa, despite moments of resilience, struggled to cope with Mexico’s attacking pressure and ultimately fell short. The defeat leaves them with ground to recover in the remaining group-stage fixtures as they aim to stay competitive in Group A.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, features an expanded format with 48 teams, bringing a new level of excitement and competition to the tournament.
