COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Meteorology says some areas in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, could receive heavy rainfall of around 100mm.
The Department said showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North Western Provinces, and in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
Several spells of showers may also occur in the districts of Anuradhapura and Hambantota.
Strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North Central Provinces, and in the districts of Hambantota and Trincomalee.
Elsewhere, fairly strong winds of 30 to 40 kmph may occur at times.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation says water levels in the Kelani River and Kalu River are expected to rise.
Residents living near the Kelani, Kalu, Attanagalu and Gin river basins have been advised to remain alert to notices issued by the Department of Irrigation.
The water level of the Attanagalu Oya at Dunamale, which had reached an alert level, is now receding.
