Investigation Launched into Shooting Incident at Galle Prison

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Prisons has commenced investigations on the shooting incident that occurred at the Galle Prison yesterday.

Prisons Spokesperson and Commissioner of Prisons, 
A.C. Gajanayake stated that a Chief Jailor of the prison has been directed to lead the inquiry into the matter.

The incident took place yesterday afternoon when two inmates attempted to escape the prison premises.

Prison officers opened fire to prevent the escape, resulting in one inmate sustaining injuries.

The Department of Prisons confirmed that one inmate was shot in the arm and has been admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The second inmate was apprehended and remains in the custody of prison officials.
