COLOMBO(News 1st); The Lanka Confectionery Manufacturers Association has assured that prices of biscuits, ice cream, chocolate, and other confectionery products will not be increased until May.
This was stated during a discussion between representatives of the association and the Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe.
The Minister had called the meeting to discuss the impact of the current situation in the country, due to Middle East regional conflicts, on the biscuit and confectionery industry, and how industry decisions would affect consumers.
Speaking at the meeting, the Minister said that the current increase in consumer prices is difficult for the public to bear. He added that the aim is to manage the impact of the global situation on the local biscuit industry while minimizing the burden on consumers and protecting those involved in the industry.
The President of the Lanka Confectionery Manufacturers Association, S.M.D. Suriyapperuma, said that although raw material prices have increased in recent times, the prices of confectionery products have not been raised even after the COVID period.
He added that products are already being distributed for the New Year season, and that regardless of any crisis, a decision has been taken not to increase prices until the end of the New Year.
