COLOMBO (News 1st) - Police say that nearly 800 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs in the past two weeks.
A significant number of those arrested include bus and three-wheeler drivers.
Yesterday, three drivers in Panadura were identified as driving under the influence. During inspections, 84 buses in Panadura were checked, and the relevant drivers were found to have used drugs.
The program is being conducted jointly by the police, the National Institute of Transport Medicine, and the Western Provincial Road Transport Authority.
Authorities noted that drivers who have used substances such as heroin, ICE, cannabis, or babul within the past 14 days can be identified through urine sample tests.
Police emphasized that the program is ongoing to ensure road safety.
