COLOMBO (News 1st); The first meeting of the Constitutional Council, held with the participation of the three newly appointed civil society representatives, took place today.
The Office of the Speaker announced that the decision regarding the appointment of the Auditor General has been postponed to the next sitting.
The Constitutional Council convened under the chairmanship of Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.
The newly appointed civil society representatives, Prof. Wasantha' Seneviratne, Austin Fernando, and Ranjith Ariyaratne, attended the meeting for the first time, following their joint confirmation by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
Several members also participated via Zoom.
Although many had expected a final decision regarding the vacant position of Auditor General during today’s meeting, no such decision was made.
The matter has instead been postponed to the next Council session.
Meanwhile, Chief Government Whip Bimal Rathnayake, who acts as the President’s representative on the Constitutional Council, said the President’s nomination for the position of Auditor General is expected to be reconsidered tomorrow.
