COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s javelin sensation Rumesh Tharanga is now setting his sights firmly on upcoming global competitions, including the Open Athletics Championship in the Czech Republic on the 16th, as he builds on a historic run that has elevated him into the upper echelons of world athletics.
Currently ranked 5th in the world, Rumesh has captured global attention following a sensational performance at the Diamond League meet in Rome, where he unleashed a colossal throw of 92.62 metres, a distance that not only secured victory but also established a new Sri Lankan national record and a new meet record.
The performance marks a defining moment for Sri Lankan track and field, signaling the emergence of a new global contender.
Competing against elite athletes, including world No. 2 Anderson Peters of Grenada, Rumesh demonstrated exceptional composure, power, and technical precision, delivering his record-breaking throw on his second attempt.
The magnitude of the achievement is reflected in his rapid rise in the sport. Rumesh now holds 8th place on the all-time world list of javelin throwers, placing him among some of the greatest athletes in the history of the discipline. He has also become the second-best Asian javelin thrower of all time, underlining his significance on both the regional and international stages.
Adding further weight to his achievement, Rumesh shattered a 20-year-old record set in Rome by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen, who had recorded 90.34 metres. His 92.62m throw is now recognized as the best performance globally in the past four years, as well as the leading mark of the current season in men’s javelin.
It also stands as the best performance by an Asian athlete since Pakistan’s Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem at the 2024 Paris Olympics, reinforcing Rumesh’s position among the world’s elite competitors.
Reacting to his record-breaking feat and looking ahead, Rumesh expressed confidence and ambition.
"I am extremely happy to have broken the Sri Lankan record for the fourth time along with setting a new meet record at a Diamond League competition. My next goals are the World Ultimate Championship, the Diamond League Final, and the Commonwealth Games. I’m aiming to achieve something big in all three. I also hope to deliver strong performances in the upcoming meets."
His coach, Tony Prasanna, praised the athlete’s determination and ability to compete at the highest level despite challenges. "Rumesh has proven that he can compete with and surpass athletes from countries with far greater resources. His dedication, courage, and determination made this journey possible. I sincerely congratulate him. It’s truly special that the people of Sri Lanka got to witness a 92-metre throw."
With momentum on his side and confidence growing, Rumesh Tharanga now steps into the next phase of his career as a genuine medal contender on the world stage.
As he prepares for key international meets in the coming weeks, expectations continue to rise around a Sri Lankan athlete who is not just breaking records, but redefining possibilities.
