COLOMBO (News 1st); The Judicial Service Association of Sri Lanka (JSA) has raised serious concerns over what it calls a growing wave of false and baseless accusations levelled against the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and judges serving in the country’s courts.
According to the JSA, these allegations, widely circulated on social media and other platforms, are part of a troubling attempt to deliberately promote misleading narratives about the judicial system.
The Association stresses that it has brought these concerns to the attention of the Judicial Service Commission.
The JSA highlights that under the Constitution of Sri Lanka, directly or indirectly influencing the decisions of the Judicial Service Commission, insulting a judicial order or judicial institution, or insulting a judge can amount to a punishable offence. It warns that spreading falsehoods against judicial officers or institutions not only violates constitutional protections but also threatens the very foundation of the legal system.
The Association cautions that promoting fabricated claims will inevitably erode public trust in the judiciary as a whole, while simultaneously weakening the rule of law. It describes the circulating accusations as part of a targeted and destructive effort to influence the independence of the judiciary—an effort it views with “serious concern.”
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting judicial independence, the JSA states firmly that it will not back down from taking action against any attempt to undermine the integrity of the judiciary or interfere with its constitutionally mandated functions.
