COLOMBO (News 1st); Cabinet has granted approval to implement a Rs. 200 daily attendance incentive for estate workers, marking a significant step aimed at supporting one of the country’s most economically vulnerable labour sectors.

According to the proposal, the payment will officially begin on January 1, offering financial encouragement for consistent daily attendance across estates.

For the first six months of implementation, the Rs. 200 incentive will be distributed through plantation companies.

Following this six-month period, the Cabinet has also approved the next stage of the process:
the incentive will be directly deposited into the estate workers’ personal bank accounts, ensuring transparency and uninterrupted payments.

The programme will be carried out under the framework proposed by the Minister of Plantations and Rural Infrastructure Facilities.
