COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Navy successfully evacuated a critically ill fisherman from a multiday fishing trawler on the high seas early this morning (19), ensuring he received urgent medical attention.
The dramatic rescue unfolded after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo received an alert from the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
Aboard the multiday fishing trawler ‘Sinusha’ (IMUL-A-2195GLE), operating 474 nautical miles south of Sri Lanka, a crew member from Galle suffered severe chest pains, prompting an immediate plea for assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, MRCC Colombo coordinated directly with the Navy, which promptly initiated remote medical guidance (Tele Therapy) to stabilize the patient.
The trawler was instructed to change course toward the nearest harbor while the Southern Naval Command deployed a naval craft to intercept the vessel offshore.
Within Galle’s Offshore Patrol Limits, naval personnel executed a precise mid-sea transfer of the ailing fisherman. Onboard the naval craft, the crew administered first aid before rushing him ashore.
The patient was transported to Galle Harbour and immediately transferred to the Teaching Hospital Karapitiya, where he is now receiving further medical treatment.
