Police Warn Against Spreading False Info During Disaster

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police issued a stern warning against the circulation of false and unverified information on social media during the ongoing national disaster response, pledging strict legal action against offenders.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Tri-Forces Headquarters, Police Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent F.U. Wootler revealed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already received several complaints regarding misleading posts that have caused fear and confusion among the public.

The Computer Crimes Division has commenced investigations into these incidents.

Wuttler condemned the unethical practice of spreading misinformation.

He warned that publishing or sharing false content is a punishable offense under Sri Lankan law, and urged citizens to act responsibly.

The spokesperson further highlighted that isolated criminal incidents,including theft, looting, and sexual offenses,have been reported from some flood-affected areas and temporary shelters.

He assured that the law will be enforced rigorously against anyone involved in such acts, reiterating the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of disaster victims.
