COLOMBO (News 1st); A dramatic rescue unfolded in Welimada’s Rendapola area at midnight on November 29, when a massive landslide buried homes and trapped residents.

Acting on urgent alerts, the Sri Lanka Army launched an immediate rescue operation under extreme conditions.

A 20-member team from Diyatalawa braved impassable roads, trekking 8 kilometers on foot to reach the disaster site. Their determination paid off—just moments ago, they successfully saved 12 people, including:

3 foreign tourists (one from Mexico and two from Argentina)

9 locals, among them a small child

The operation was nothing short of heroic, as villagers report that five more houses and about 10 people may still be buried under the collapsed hillside.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with an additional 30-member Army team now en route to the area.
