COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Ministry of Health and Mass Media to facilitate heart surgeries for 50 Sri Lankan children at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India.
The MoU was signed between the Ministry of Health and Mass Media and the Rotary Club of Colombo West, with Health Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and Rotary Club President K.P. Nagaraja representing the two parties.
The project will be funded through a Rotary Global Project, jointly supported by Rotary Colombo West and Rotary Kochi West.
Currently, more than 1,000 children in Sri Lanka are on waiting lists for critical heart surgeries, including emergency procedures.
This initiative aims to ease the burden by prioritizing patients based on medical urgency, with selections made by specialists at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.
This is the second phase of the project, following the successful completion of surgeries for 60 children two years ago, who were treated and safely returned to Sri Lanka.
Building on that success, the new phase will also include training opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors and nurses at Amrita Hospital, while Indian specialists will visit Sri Lanka to conduct programs on early detection of congenital heart disease during pregnancy.
