COLOMBO (News 1st) - Police say six people, including a child, have died in separate road accidents reported within the past 24 hours.
A 79-year-old man was killed when a tractor collided with a bicycle at the Keligama junction on the Hambantota–Meegahajandura road.
In another incident, a woman died following a collision between a three-wheeler and a lorry near the 149th kilometer post on the Kandy–Jaffna road.
A 65-year-old three-wheeler driver lost control of his vehicle and overturned in Bogaswewa along the Padaviya road in Vavuniya, while a 62-year-old retired army officer from Bomiriya, Kaduwela, died after his motorcycle overturned near an army camp on the Athurugiriya–Godagama road.
An 11-year-old boy from Katukurunda was fatally hit by a lorry while riding a bicycle on the Galle–Colombo main road near the Wettumakada junction.
Meanwhile, a 69-year-old man from Kattankudy died after losing control of his motorcycle and overturning in Panchchankeni along the Trincomalee–Batticaloa road.
Police attribute most of these accidents to careless and reckless driving.
