Probe Launched into Death of Vavuniya University Student Linked to Ragging Incident

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced an investigation into the death of a student of the University of Vavuniya, allegedly linked to a ragging incident.

Deputy Minister Dr. Madhura Senewiratne stated that the inquiry will be conducted through the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, Prof. A. Athputharajah, confirmed that an internal investigation has also been initiated.

The deceased has been identified as Sachithra Nirmal, a 21-year-old student from Yasasiripura, Anuradhapura.

According to reports, on October 31, senior students are alleged to have forcibly administered alcohol to several new students. 

The group was reportedly subjected to severe ragging, including being confined outdoors under intense sunlight.

The Vavuniya Puravarasakulam Police have commenced further investigations into the incident.
