COLOMBO (News 1st); Authorities have uncovered a major international drug trafficking link following the seizure of a multi-billion rupee narcotics shipment off Sri Lanka’s western coast.
The Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a multi-day fishing vessel in deep seas and escorted it to the Dikowita Harbour yesterday (2).
Onboard, officials discovered 335 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) and heroin, with an estimated street value of Rs. 5000 million.
Initial investigations revealed that the operation was allegedly orchestrated by a Dubai-based organized crime figure known as Dinuka, according to police sources.
This revelation emerged during interrogations of the vessel’s owner and crew.
Six fishermen aboard the vessel were taken into custody at the time of the seizure. Subsequently, the main suspect believed to have coordinated the operation was arrested in Galle during a targeted raid conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau.
Police confirmed that the suspect is currently being held for seven days of questioning, as investigators work to uncover the full extent of the trafficking network and its international connections.
