CID Seeks 90-Day Detention For Lawyer In Murder Case

COLOMBO (News 1st);The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama that it intends to obtain a further 90-day detention order for the lawyer who was arrested and detained for 72 hours on suspicion of aiding and abetting the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa.

The investigating officer representing the CID made this statement while submitting a report on the investigation conducted into Kehel Baddara Padme, one of the main suspects in the incident.

The officer appearing for the CID stated that, based on the interrogation of Kehel Baddara Padme, one of the main suspects in the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, Thamara Abeyratne, who works as a lawyer, was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting the crime.

The investigating officers informed the court that the arrested suspect has been detained for 72 hours and is currently being questioned. They further stated that they intend to obtain a new 90-day detention order through the Ministry of Defense once the current order expires.

They added that investigations conducted following the lawyer’s arrest revealed that she had arranged for the first suspected shooter, who came to kill Ganemulla Sanjeewa, to enter the court premises disguised as a lawyer.

The investigating officers stated that the suspect lawyer had also provided the first suspected shooter with two ties to assist in his disguise, and that she had given him her lawyer’s ID card to produce a fake lawyer’s ID.

They further stated that the suspect lawyer had given the first suspect two criminal law books and a lawyer’s vehicle sticker.

They informed the court that investigations had revealed the lawyer provided legal assistance in cases involving Kehel Baddara Padme and that they intend to examine her bank accounts.

The officers also informed the court that information regarding five actresses who had relationships with the suspect, Kehel Baddara Padme, had surfaced, and requested permission to examine several bank account records.

The Chief Magistrate, after considering the facts presented, ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to report the progress of the investigation to the court on November 07.
