Police Constable Remanded Over Alleged Assault on Lawyer

COLOMBO (News 1st) – Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has instructed that an immediate and formal investigation be conducted into the incident in which a lawyer was allegedly assaulted at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.

The Minister stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been directed to obtain a statement from the police constable involved and to carry out further inquiries into the incident.

Meanwhile, Attorney Gunaratne Wanninayake and his son, who are also reportedly linked to the incident, have been summoned to the Mount Lavinia Police today (12) to provide statements.

The incident occurred on the 10th of October, following an argument over a parking dispute between the lawyer’s vehicle and a prison bus within the court premises.

Police said the constable was arrested based on a complaint lodged by the Attorney and has been remanded until the 13th of this month.
