COLOMBO (News 1st); A 21-year-old woman from Avissawella has been arrested for allegedly scratching and defacing a section of the Sigiriya Mirror Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient graffiti and cultural significance.

The incident occurred on September 14, when the suspect visited Sigiriya with a group of companions. According to Sigiriya Police, she was taken into custody after allegedly causing damage to the wall — a treasured archaeological feature that dates back over a thousand years.

The Mirror Wall, also known as Ketapath Pawura, is one of the most iconic elements of the Sigiriya rock fortress.

Originally polished to a high sheen, it has preserved centuries-old inscriptions and verses written by ancient visitors. Any form of vandalism to this wall is considered a serious offense under Sri Lanka’s heritage protection laws.

Police confirmed that the suspect will be produced before court today.
