COLOMBO (News 1st); A wave of political controversy has erupted following the discovery of a large stockpile of chemicals suspected to be used in the production of methamphetamine ("Ice") in Mideniya. The incident has triggered sharp reactions from across the political spectrum, with accusations, denials, and calls for accountability dominating public discourse.

Speaking on the matter, Janaka Tissa Kuttiarachchi, former Member of Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), expressed concern over what he described as a targeted campaign against Namal Rajapaksa and the party’s leadership.

“Just because the chemicals were found near a house allegedly linked to a SLPP member, some are trying to drag Namal Rajapaksa into this,” he said. “Photos taken at public events are being used to create a narrative that he is involved. No one talks about opposition leaders like Sajith Premadasa or Ranil Wickremesinghe. It’s always Namal.”

Tissakuttiarachchi accused the government of attempting to politically isolate Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, Indrananda de Silva, a central committee member of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), demanded that the SLPP apologize to the nation, asserting that the party cannot distance itself from the scandal.

“Namal Rajapaksa should stop acting innocent,” de Silva said. “The person who contested from his party is the one linked to the house where the chemicals were found. You can’t escape responsibility when your candidate is involved in trafficking substances that destroy future generations.”

He further criticized the SLPP for allegedly maintaining ties with underworld networks, claiming that the party’s actions have exposed its connections to criminal elements.

In response to the growing controversy, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, regardless of political affiliations.

“We came to power promising justice and accountability. That’s why we’ve been able to bring back underworld figures and initiate proper investigations,” he stated. “Political connections are being exposed through these inquiries, and the law will apply to everyone—whether they are politicians, businessmen, or gang leaders.”

Jayatissa also highlighted the historic failure of previous governments to act against criminal networks due to political interference, noting that the current administration has empowered law enforcement to act without fear.

The incident has sparked widespread public interest, with many citizens questioning the depth of political involvement in drug trafficking and organized crime.

Investigations are ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are expected to reveal further details.
