COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have uncovered over 100 kilograms of suspected chemical substances believed to be used in the production of ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) from a marshy field in the Kandana area.
According to police sources, the discovery was made following a tip-off, leading investigators to a concealed stash buried in farmland.
Preliminary investigations have already commenced, with authorities treating the find as part of a larger, organized drug manufacturing operation.
Further analysis conducted by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) has confirmed that the chemicals recovered from Middeniya are consistent with substances commonly used in the production of synthetic drugs.
The total weight of the chemical stock recovered from Middeniya is reported to be 50,000 kilograms, hidden underground on private property.
Police revealed that the discovery was made based on information extracted during interrogations of a notorious organized crime figure known as "Backhoe Saman", currently in custody. His statements led officers to the hidden cache.
In a related development, another stockpile of similar chemical substances was found yesterday in Netolpitiya, Tangalle, raising suspicions that both discoveries may be linked to the same criminal network.
Samples from both locations are being sent to the Government Analyst’s Department for further forensic testing. Police stated that findings from these tests will be presented to the Tangalle Magistrate’s Court as part of ongoing legal proceedings.
