COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Shasheendra Rajapaksa, currently in remand custody over allegations of misusing state property, has filed a bail application before the Colombo High Court.
The application was taken up today before High Court Judge Lanka Jayaratne, who scheduled the next hearing for October 2 to verify the facts surrounding the request.
The case relates to an incident involving a building constructed without authorization on land belonging to the Mahaweli Authority in the Sevanagala area. The property was reportedly damaged during the 2022 public unrest, and Rajapaksa is accused of pressuring officials to claim compensation amounting to Rs. 8,85 million for the destroyed assets.
Rajapaksa was arrested on August 6, following investigations into the alleged misuse of public funds and abuse of authority.
