COLOMBO (News 1st); Several members of the Central Committee of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) met with Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on Wednesday (3) morning, raising concerns over what they claim are preparations to arrest former Minister Udaya Gammanpila under the ICCPR Act.
The meeting took place at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, where PHU representatives expressed alarm over what they described as a government-led attempt to suppress dissent.
When asked about Gammanpila’s current whereabouts by the media, Athukorala clarified that the former minister is not in hiding, but is overseas pursuing higher education.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on August 22 that an investigation has been launched into a statement made by Gammanpila during a recent press conference.
The probe was initiated following a complaint and is being conducted under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act.
