COLOMBO (News 1st); The United States reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and regional cooperation with the launch of the inaugural Young South Asian Leaders Initiative (YSALI) workshop in Colombo. The event was officially opened by U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Shelly Seaver, and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Gamage.

Funded by the U.S. government, YSALI aims to cultivate the next generation of South Asian leaders by promoting peace, economic growth, and civic engagement across the region. The three-day workshop brings together over 80 competitively selected youth leaders from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, all of whom are alumni of previous U.S. government exchange programs.

“Each of you has already demonstrated leadership through your participation in U.S. government exchange programs, taking the initiative to create change—often in challenging circumstances,” said Ambassador Chung. “Now, by coming together, you are combining your ideas, talents, and dreams to shape the future of this region.”

Participants will engage in interactive sessions with U.S. experts, business leaders, and government officials, focusing on entrepreneurship, leadership, and regional collaboration. The program is designed to foster cross-border partnerships and strengthen ties between South Asia and the United States.

A highlight of the event is the YSALI Expo, which will showcase U.S. businesses, civic initiatives, and entrepreneurial projects. The Expo will serve as a dynamic networking platform, connecting youth leaders with local organizations, U.S. partners, and fellow alumni to explore collaborative opportunities.

YSALI is part of the broader U.S. strategy to support a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific, by investing in young changemakers who are poised to drive innovation and inclusive development across South Asia.
