Stray Ponies in Nuwara Eliya to Be Impounded and Auctioned

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Upali Wanigasekera says that steps are being taken to capture and impound stray ponies that obstruct vehicles and disrupt both local and foreign tourists entering the city.

He said that while some individuals use these ponies to transport tourists and earn income, many fail to properly care for the animals.

As a result, the ponies have been seen roaming freely around the racecourse and municipal premises, with some falling ill.

Despite repeated instructions for the owners to retrieve and care for the animals, there has been little response.

Consequently, municipal employees have begun capturing and impounding the stray ponies on municipal land, where they will be looked after.

Mayor Wanigasekera added that if owners fail to pay the required fines and reclaim their ponies, the animals will be auctioned by the Municipal Council.
