COLOMBO (News 1st): A defamation case filed by Anura Kumara Dissanayake against former MP Janaka Tissa Kuttiarachchi came to a close at the Colombo District Court, following an unconditional apology issued by the former parliamentarian.
The case was filed based on a public statement made on August 19, 2023, during a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna rally in central Colombo, where Kuttiarachchi allegedly accused Dissanayake of investing Rs. 5 billion in Malta.
The remarks, according to the President’s petition, were intended to portray him as a dishonest and unethical individual, damaging his reputation.
In response, President Dissanayake filed a civil suit seeking Rs. 10 billion in damages from Kuttiarachchi and another respondent.
During today’s hearing, Kuttiarachchi, through his legal counsel, expressed unreserved regret for the statement, leading to a mutual agreement between both parties to settle the matter amicably.
