COLOMBO (News 1st); The driver of the crane truck involved in the fatal multi-vehicle crash near the Borella cemetery roundabout was remanded until August 7 by order of Colombo Magistrate M.N. Rizwan.
The owner of the heavy vehicle, who was also taken into custody, was released on bail.
The accident occurred Monday (28) morning when the crane truck, reportedly suffering from brake failure, collided with six motorcycles, two cars, and a jeep near a traffic signal.
The impact resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to seven others, including two police officers attached to the Bribery Commission and the Criminal Records Division.
Police confirmed that the crane truck traveled approximately 40 meters without stopping, and preliminary medical reports indicate the driver was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident.
Officials from the Department of Motor Traffic inspected the vehicle and verified that its braking system was non-functional.
