COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and Highways, has announced the launch of a comprehensive vehicle inspection program aimed at improving road safety across the country.

Deputy Minister Ruwan Kodithuwakku stated that mechanical defects in vehicles are a significant contributing factor to road accidents in Sri Lanka.

In response, the government plans to implement district-level inspections to assess the roadworthiness of vehicles currently in operation.

According to official data, Sri Lanka has approximately 8 million registered vehicles. Of these, 4 million are motorcycles, while 1.3 million are three-wheelers. The remaining vehicles include cars, vans, buses, and trucks.

To support the new initiative, the government intends to recruit 20 additional motor vehicle inspectors. Deputy Minister Kodithuwakku emphasized that the current number of inspectors is insufficient to carry out inspections on a nationwide scale.
